A friend of mine knew that I was into the whole diet thing this year. This is the year when I promised myself that I will be the best of what I can be. 2 more months and this year will come to an end and I am not yet there, still halfway there, but nonetheless I am happy and thankful for all of the results of the hard work and the determination that I’ve had. But honestly, my “hard work and determination” is probably futile compared to others so I shall not talk more about that. 😛
Anyway, continuing on with my story, this friend of mine asked if I wanted to try some of the diet food that her friend is making. Basically, the concept is just like those really popular ones – Sexy Chef (my sister tried this), Healthy Cravings (I tried this before), etc. etc. Because a lot of people would like to lose weight, I guess, it means that there is a big market here in the Philippines. I saw their food and tried it – specifically the Beef Kaldereta which is 290.8 calories and the Mushroom Leek and Pork Cake with Seafood Dumpling and Garlic Spinach and Tofu on Veggie Rice (that’s a really long title) which is 390.8 calories.
Both dishes didn’t look like diet food. First of all, the portioning, it was pretty big. Secondly, there was rice and mind you… white rice not brown rice. I would understand if it’s brown rice but NO. And to top it all, Beef Kaldereta is a common Filipino food which I have never thought of as diet at all. Not in my whole lifetime.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the sit down and talk to the brains behind Smart Nutrition but I got to chat with them over FB (don’t we jus t love the internet?). Anyway, here’s a question and answer that I had with them.
(Just to give you a background about them though, Smart Nutrition is basically made up of 3 people: a doctor, an engineer, and a chef.)
- How did you guys come up with the business?
The Chef and the Engineer met in a car club – they were both founding members of the BBEast DIY crew. Sometime around late last year, the Engineer and the Chef “hibernated” from the car scene to focus on other priorities. During the “hibernation” period, the Engineer let himself go physically and as part of his resolution in January 2012, he decided that it was time to get back in shape. During this time, he asked the Doctor to be his “buddy” for his resolution. As part of the resolution, he also became active in the car club around April (about the same time when the Chef became active as well). Both (the Chef and the Engineer) were surprised to see at the transformation they had in around 3 months.
During this time, just like how any group would catch up with each other, they got into talking about their 3-month transformation. The Engineer was quite knowledgeable in creating fat loss programs (which he has been doing for friends for the past 4 years now) and on the other hand, the Chef was an internationally-trained, award-winning chef who can come up with awesome tasting meals. That’s when Smart Nutrition came about.
- What would be your difference to other businesses who also cater to the same market?
Unlike other business, their program is medically supervised, custom-made for each client and a tracking of the progress of each client is done every 2 weeks. This is critical because it serves as a feedback mechanism for the team to be able to tweak the client’s diet depending on how the client’s body react. In addition to that, since they have a chef on board, they make sure that each and every meal would taste really good and you wouldn’t feel like you’re on a diet (I have to agree on this and I think my parents agree to this as well. I made them taste the food. :p)
At the start, most of the clients complain that they give them too much food but after two weeks, they become surprised that they still lose weight inspite of the feeling of fullness. Another great thing about them is that they don’t pattern their meals after fad diets. They focus on nutritional balance which is good for anyone. Another great thing about them is that they’re all members of PASOO (Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity) so you are sure that you are in safe hands. It’s good that they’re in the loop with these medical things so that you wouldn’t get “praning” that you’re doing something wrong.
- For every person who enrolls, what does he/she have to go through to be able to join the program?
To be able to join the program, you first have to be examined by the Doctor (Dr. Atutubo). There will be various body measurements that will be made which is the baseline of yourself. Medical history will also be checked as well as vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In addition to that, food preferences are also taken into consideration. Once all of these information are gathered, this will be handed over to the Engineer and the Chef and the diet program will be designed.
The Engineer designs the nutritional profile of the client and obviously, the Chef comes up with the meals.
- The food is really good, where did your chef train and what is the difference of the food that you offer as opposed to cooking it at home?
The Chef is a Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) trained chef, and is the 1st Manila District Skills Competition I.T. Sector Cookery Trade Area Gold medalist who is also a consistent medalist in the in-house competitions of the International School of Culinary Arts and hotel Management (ISCAHM). In addition to his resume, he was also a former Administrative Chef at the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and a former Sous Chef at Hotel Coachman in New Zealand.
For one, that is the BIG and HUGE difference of ordering from them and from cooking your own food at home. Just like in any diet program, the food that they will be delivering to you will have calculate nutritional information. Everything is measured. With the Chef’s cooking skills and creativity, he can use ingredients which are lower in calorie and hare healthier alternatives to conventional ingredients to come up with meals that tastes great, low in calorie and FILLING.
- How much does it cost?
Five custom tailored gourmet meals a day (3 main means and 2 snacks) with free delivery, and the medical assessment is pegged at PHP 800 a day with a minimum of 2 weeks subscription. They do have an ongoing promo though of PHP 100 off on the daily rate for the first 2 weeks.
