During my past life as a corporate career woman, I always found ways to de-stress my life after my 8-12 hours shift. Well aside from my favorite beer, which was the reason why I packed all the weight in my 20’s (tsk tsk tsk), I found peace in practicing yoga. I started practicing yoga at age 23 but I never achieved the “perfect form”. My hamstrings up to now remain stiff, and I have my knees still bent while doing my downward facing dog. But I found my peace when I do practice yoga.
Back in the day (counting back, that was almost a decade ago), we did not have that many proper yoga studios. We only had a few here in South which offered consistent classes. So I settled with my trusty yoga DVD, which with daily use helped me master some of the basic yoga poses.
Lucky for us now, we have several studio options where we can take classes even straight after work. For those who work in Makati, Urban Ashram Manila has just recently opened its Makati branch right at the heart of Makati CBD – located at 6780 Building.
Urban Ashram Manila (UAM) is also offering a program called Project Y: Endless Summer – which is aimed at young adults from ages 16-25. Yeah, I am way passed the target market. =) But I agree I wished I had consistently practiced yoga when I was in my early 20’s. The studio is offering classes like Music Yoga and Work-Out Yoga aimed at young professionals to counterbalance their fast paced, stressful lives.
I had a glimpsed of the program thru the soft-launch held at the new UAM 6780 branch and here are my 3 take aways from the yoga class we had:
1. The breath can help you in many ways to – de-stress and to clear your mind. Most of the time, we underestimate the importance of the breath when in fact this is the very first action we do when we are born, and the last when we pass away. Yoga is centered on the breath and you will be surprised how much potential you can achieve, physically and mentally by just mastering the act of breathing.
2. Yoga practice can help you find your “dharma” – that is “the natural universal laws whose observance enables humans to be contented and happy”. Beyond the calisthenics, yoga can help you find your purpose thru meditation.
3. Staring yoga while you are young will give you tremendous benefits. Through consistent practice, it can help you focus on the present, help you make decisions easily and hopefully have richer lives.
Beyond the usual fitness goals you can achieve with yoga, Urban Ashram believes that a regular Yoga practice benefits both the mind and body and helps everybody make more responsible choices for a healthier lifestyle.
