1. Why did you take up the Cohen Program?
I was on my 5th month after giving birth to my first child when I decided to enroll into the Cohen Program. I was 178.6 lbs. then and still had the pregnancy weight. I only lost 12.4 lbs since the time I gave birth considering I delivered my child prematurely on the 8month. Since I was already overweight when I conceived, it was inevitable that I had pregnancy complications like Gestational Diabetes (GDM), hypertension, and eventually pre-eclampsia. I lost my baby due to sepsis while in the Neonatal ICU as she was small for her gestational age.
After having undergone my annual physical examination last December 2011, being classified as in the category of Obese Class I was an alarming realization for me. I knew I had to do something to manage my health risks as my husband and I build our family.
The fear of losing another child and bearing any complications in my next pregnancy drove me to take up the Cohen Program. I knew I had to change my eating habits and prepare my body in time for our next pregnancy.
2. What was your lifestyle like before undergoing the Cohen Program?
As I was in Sales & Marketing, I had to travel a lot and entertain dealers and business partners while dining out and socials. Drinking alcohol was a staple. In addition, I was never conscious about my food intake and how much it affected my weight.
I started working at age 22 and my weight was at 130lbs. Still normal weight range for my height at 5’3. Slowly over 9 years, I packed on weight, about 5-7 lbs a year until I reached 178 lbs after pregnancy.
The weight gain was inevitable. I did not have time to exercise, was drinking alcohol (beer was my fave) almost every week. I was not conscious about my food intake and was devouring anything thinking it can wear off by doing a bit of exercise.
3. What were the difficulties you experienced being overweight/obese? Did you suffer from any medical conditions.
Being obese then, I started having gout attacks and shortness of breath when I take flights of stairs. At 31, it terrified me, as I knew I was too young to experience those.
As I packed on the weight over the years, when it was time for me to conceive, I developed Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and had to take metformin 3x daily to regulate my sugar and normalize my menstrual cycle just to be able to conceive.
4. Have you tried other diet or weight-loss programs before Cohen? What are these?
I tried South Beach Diet as well as Atkins Diet. For Atkins, as it was a popular diet at that time, I had lost weight after eliminating the carbs but I knew it was not sustainable. The thought of not eating rice and bread was a grueling experience. I had lost weight for a time but regained it back BIG TIME after I went back my regular eating habits.
The South Beach Diet was quite the same. It regulated my intake for the time being, while i was still on the program and while meals were delivered to me. I lost 10 lbs as promised by the program. But after I finished the 2 weeks, I had to re-enroll and shed some more cash to sustain the diet. I was left with no program to follow after my paid delivered food.
5. Please tell us what makes the Cohen program different.

o As it teaches you a lifestyle change.
The Centre gives you a meal plan tailored to your body needs based on your blood chemistry. It is your OWN PLAN & no other person will have the same plan as you. It teaches you discipline as you painstakingly prepare and weigh your food for every meal. Your food quantity may seem a little at first but it trained my body to only consume the right amount of food. After a while, I was feeling full with the quantity of food in my meals. I realized my body really just needed that amount daily, and I can survive.
o As it teaches you discipline & creativity
As you only have limited protein & vegetables in your list, you become creative in making / preparing your meals. You realize later on that you begin to appreciate the natural taste of food – the sweetness of the vegetables and the “milkiness” of the meat – all because you got used to just using the most basic of all ingredients. No MSG, no seasonings, no artificial taste. You realize that you really do not need all those unnatural products to make your food taste good. And because the food is good & prepared healthily, you begin to do the same for your own household & your family likewise benefits from the healthy eating habits.
o Because you see tangible results even on the first week on the program.
Week after week you see your efforts paying off as inches and pounds are slowly vanishing. You get motivated by the results and you feel better every week. Not to mention, people around you noticing results and you inspire them with the discipline & the effort you put in the program.
o Because it showed several health benefits which other diets do not offer.
Most diets do only two things. Make you lose weight, and look better. But what Cohen program does is it balances your hormones and normalizes bodily functions. What was evident in my case was my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) was treated after I lost the pounds and my period was regulated. I was no longer Obese Class I and was on my normal weight range after 5 months.
o You have a very strong support group by means of the Cohen Lifestyle Centre Facebook Page.
It is nice to know that you are not alone in the journey to wellness and you have other people on the program cheering you on with every milestone you achieve. The Facebook page allows you to share your thoughts, ask questions and interact with other “Cohenites” and share best practices as we go thru the program. The Centre assigns you a consultant for the 6-months however, it is thru the members experiencing the same journey as you where you learn the most. It is a very helpful avenue to keep your progress in check. =)
6. How did you find out about the Cohen Program?
I found out about the program with my mom-in-law who was also on the program. I have also seen my other friends on Facebook lose weight and saw how healthy and fabulous they look.
7. Was it difficult to adapt to the Cohen lifestyle? What adjustments did you have to take?
The Centre will give and explain the Maintenance guidelines to maintain your goal weight to achieve metabolic equilibrium. After eating my Cohen meals for almost 6 months, I am now NOT used to eating salty food and I continued preparing my meals the Cohen way. Unlike before, I am now more conscious of what I eat. Cohen program has taught me what foods trigger my weight gain thru its Refeeding program. The Refeeding program which I took for 18 days helped me “break in” my system to introducing regular food in more quantities to ensure that I do not regain the weight that I have already lost.
Now on maintenance, even though I over eat on special occasions, I know I have a program I can go back to and just by following the maintenance guidelines, I can get rid of the gained weight on my own in a matter of days.
8. Are you happy with the results?
I enrolled in the program to essentially have a healthier weight and have a healthy pregnancy when we conceive again. From the onset, I conditioned myself not to cheat and commit 110% to stick to the program. I benefitted from the hard work and my efforts paid off as I steadily lost weight week on week and began to feel better about myself. I am overjoyed with the results and I am happy that Cohen Lifestyle Program became true to its promises.
9. How has your life changed for the better since you started losing weight? What medical benefits did you observe while and after doing the program?
