70.3 Miles for Smiles: Andy Leuterio’s Challenge

Have you ever challenged yourself and thought of the good of others in the process? Well, Andy Leuterio wants to make his 2010 Ironman 70.3 attempt mean something more than just besting his previous effort. Starting this year, he wants to be able to help kids with cleft palates get operations.

Cleft palate operations do not cost too much. It costs around P15,000 for the cleft palate operation to be done, but since the condition isn’t life-threatening, attention is normally not given by prospective donors. With this, these kids with cleft palates do get a lot of attention… unwanted, undeserved stares and ridicule from their peers, that is. It’s no wonder that they have a hard time in school, and as they mature, they have a hard time getting jobs.

This is Andy Leuterio’s way of drawing needed attention to the kids and their need for operations, hoping that one day, they can begin to smile!

His mission is to race the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines to raise funds for kids with cleft palates. ALL of the proceeds will be for the benefit of Noordhoff Cranofacial Foundation / Smiletrain Philippines.

Andy Leuterios’s race attempt is already covered by the following sponsors: Ford Philippines, All Terra Cyclery, Suunto, K-Swiss and Fitness First. All your pledges are PURELY for the kids.

You can help out by making a Performance Pledge.

It’s not a normal pledge, by the way:

To make this attempt even more challenging for Andy Leuterio, he has proposed coming up with a pledge formula that asks you to donate double or triple IF HE BEATS CERTAIN TIME LIMITS. (He hasn’t done so yet, so this is as much a challenge for him as it will be for you.)

This is the way it works:

The formula, assuming you commit Php 1,000.xx :

A finishing time of 5:31:00 or higher, Your Base Amount is UNCHANGED.
Ex. P1,000, Finish Time of 5:33 = P1,000 Final Amount

A finishing time between 5:01:00 and 5:31:00, Your Base Amount is DOUBLED
Ex. P1,000, Finish Time of 5:01:45 = P2,000 Final Amount

A finishing time less than 5:00:59, Your Base Amount is TRIPLED
Ex. P1,000, Finish Time of 4:59:01 = P3,000 Final Amount

The idea is simple: the faster he goes, the more kids will benefit. The goal is Php 450,000 — enough for 30 operations.

You can see this …
As a way to get him to train harder,
As a way to encourage him to do better in the race itself,
As a way to get attention to kids with cleft palates,
As a way to help the kids get the operations they need to have a happy childhood (Php 15,000 per child)
Or just as a crazy guy’s way of making a crazy challenge become something more than just an exercise in masochism and turn it into something altruistic.

Whichever way you see it, we hope you will say YES and pledge to help out by emailing your pledge!

No need to send the money until after the race itself. The official results will be posted from the Ironman 70.3 Philippines website as soon as it’s over so you’ll know it straight from the horse’s mouth.

They will get in touch with you personally after the race to get the pledges together. Feel free to get in touch with Andy Leuterio’s brother, Rey, should you have any concerns or questions.

Thanks for helping the kids smile!
