It’s back to school for me!
I went back to school last week and my classes will run until Feb. 6. Yey! (Haha… Such a nerd!) I’m attending a yoga teacher training 400 hour course. This will be conducted by James Brown of American Yoga School at the Onelife Studio. I’m so excited since i’ll be studying and learning more about the human body. That makes me giddy! I really loved anatomy back in high school (told you I was a nerd!). We also learned more about the origins and philisophy of yoga and we will learn different poses and pedagogy starting next week.
Anyway, taking a yoga teacher training program is really part of my life list (my life list can be found here).
Back in 2007, I started practicing yoga and ever since, I have turned to it every now and then. There was a time when I was really addicted to it because I really felt the benefits of my practice. Then, a lot of things happened and I had no time to practice. I haven’t been turning to it for the last two years of my life and have only done two sessions in a studio and a few at home. I always say that motherhood got in the way, but I now know that it was just an excuse that I gave — that I actually could practice if I set aside time for it.
These past few weeks (we started taking the online courses last year) have been really enlightening for me. For those who follow my personal Facebook feed, you would notice that I have been mentioning that I have learned a lot about myself since the time I started taking these classes. Honestly, I have learned a great deal about the world, about life and about relationships with people, and I never really expected to learn about these. I was expecting James to just tell us all about asana (poses) and probably a little about anatomy, but the philosophy of yoga was what really got me interested and what made me appreciate yoga more.
What I love about this teacher training class is that I think even those who do not intend to teach in the future or if you just want a deeper understanding about yoga, you will get to appreciate this class. We haven’t gotten to the part where he teaches us about the poses, so I’m really not sure though on what skill level is required, but from what James has been saying, a good teacher is someone who understands the needs of each students, clearly mentions how to do the poses and understands how to tweak it in a way that it (the practice) is beneficial for everyone who attends and is someone sees the bigger picture clearly, on why yoga or the practice of yoga exists.
Here’s a nice video from James Brown that explains what Yoga Practice is.
So far, I am glad that I took this class. It came at the right time when I needed it in my life. There will be more classes like these in the future from James Brown and Onelife Studio, and I hope to see more of you try it out. If you have tried out the classes already, I’d love to hear from you, too. What did you like and what didn’t you like?
